Lilac Enfleurage

An ancient technique. A garden remembered.
Light but true and genuine lilac scent.

Enfleurage is one of the oldest and most labour-intensive methods of botanical perfumery, born in the flower fields of Grasse, France. Rather than distilling or pressing a plant, enfleurage coaxes fragrance from delicate blossoms by allowing them to exhale slowly into a waiting fat, a process so gentle it captures what steam and solvents cannot: the living, breathing quality of a flower in full bloom.

The fat becomes a vessel. A memory made solid.

Over ten consecutive days, fresh lilac blossoms were laid into a base of deodorized shea butter and left to breathe. Each day, the spent blooms were lifted away and replaced with a new harvest. Ten exchanges, ten layers of scent absorbed into the same patient base. No heat. No shortcuts. Only time, repetition, and the quiet alchemy of fat and flower.

The result is not a perfume. It is a record.

These blossoms were gathered from the lilac trees that grew beside my grandparents' home, the ones I grew up next to, that marked every spring of my childhood. My grandparents are no longer here. The trees remain.

This enfleurage was made as an act of remembrance: to hold something living from a place and a time that cannot be returned to. Each tin carries that garden, that season, and the particular quality of light that only exists in memory.

Memento is made in an extremely limited quantity due to the labour of making it.
